1. According to family tradition, Wellington was somehow attached to the name Worthington, an English name. Grandmother Sarah Worthington Hutcheson Holman’s grandfather was supposed be the brother of the Duke of Wellington. We find, upon investigation, however, that the Duke of Wellington and his brothers were of the same generation as the father of Sarah Worthington. James Doughty Hutcheson related that his grandmother, Sarah Worthington Hutcheson Holman, sued the estate of the Duke of Wellington, but that England would not allow his monetary assets to leave that country. In v.22 of the Dictionary of National Biography, p. 1081-1136, we find a discussion of the family background and contemporaries of the Duke of Wellington.

Henry Colley and Mary Usher had a son, Richard Colley, b.ca. 1690, d. 1758. He inherited land from a cousin named Wesley, himself related to John and Charles Wesley. Richard Colley became Richard Colley Wesley and eventually Richard Colley Wellesley. The family was Irish. Richard m. Elizabeth Sale, daughter of John Sale, registrar of the diocese of Dublin, Ireland. Their son, Garnett Wellesley, first Viscount Wellesley of Danagan and first Earl of Mornington, b. 1735, d. 1781, m. Feb 6, 1759, Anne Hill. They were the parents of the following: 1. Richard Colley, Marquis Wellesley, b. 1760,d. 1842; 2. Wm. Wellesley-Pole, Baron of Maryborough, b. 1763,d. 1845; 3. Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, b. 1769, d. 1852; 4. Gerald Valerian Wellesley, b. 1770,d. 1848; 5. Henry Wellesley, First Baron Cowley, b. 1773,d. 1847; 6. Anne, b. 1768,d. 1844.

We checked the sons of the Duke and his brothers and found no likelihood of relationship. We note that the Lord Mayor of London was named Wellington, also. We feel it much more likely that the English Worthingtons were related to him. We wish grandmother Sarah Worthington Hutcheson Holman were alive to clear up this mystery for her descendants.
