494. Joseph Abraham Skillman Sr. was born on 17 October 1793 in Harlingen or Blawenburg, Somerset, NJ. In 1870 he was a farmer in Harlingen, Montgomery Twp., Somerset, NJ. He signed a will on 21 March 1878 in Pennington, Mercer, NJ. The following message/will was on a scrap of paper (3" x 8") in a small red purse in my father's possession at his death.

$1000 Pennington March 21st 1878.
At my decease, I promise to pay my son Thomas Skillman, or his heirs, one thousand dollars, without defalcation, value received.

Wm. B. Mainkind(sp?) Joseph died on 24 May 1881 at the age of 87 in Skillman, Somerset, NJ. Copy of Death Cert. from Twp. of Montgomery, 3/31/1999. gives POB as Blawenburgh. He was buried in Blawenburg, Montgomery Twp., Somerset, NJ. His SOA Number is 109. On April 13, 2010 I discovered a note, on notebook paper, about 3"x8", signed by Joseph in a small red purse, 2 5/8" x 2/1/8" x 1/2", probably in my father's effects.

Joseph Abraham Skillman Sr. and Maria D. Stryker were married on 30 November 1816 in Harlingen, Montgomery Twp., Somerset, NJ. They were married by Rev. Peter Labagh. They appeared in the census in 1870 in Harlingen, Montgomery Twp., Somerset, NJ. He was living with his son, Thomas, in the 1870 Census. Maria D. Stryker, daughter of Stephen D. Stryker and Mary Bogart, was born on 22 October 1797 in Harlingen, Montgomery Twp., Somerset, NJ. Death Cert give POB as Neshanic, NJ. She was baptized on 26 November 1797 at Dutch Reformed Church in Neshanic, Somerset, NJ. She died on 23 August 1874 at the age of 76 in Skillman, Somerset, NJ. Fred. C. Sk. Jr SAR applic. and The Strycker Family by Wm. S. Stryker has d. 9/20/1874. Copy of Death Cert. Twp. of Montgomery, 3/31/1999 has Aug. 23, 1875. Maria was buried in Blawenburg, Montgomery Twp., Somerset, NJ. Plot 49.
