 Skillman Places

A Skillman place that left a large impression on me was my paternal grandparents' house that they built at 23 Hart Ave., Hopewell, NJ about 1899.  The street was named after John Hart, "The Signer,"  one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. His farm was farther out of town.  We visited frequently when I was growing up and I frequently spent weeks there, sleeping in the 2nd floor turret room. Grandpa died in 1938 and Grandma sold the house in 1941.23 Hart Ave., Hopewell, NJ

Skillman, N.J. was named after Abraham J. Skillman (RN 862), my great granduncle. My grandfather, William Newton Skillman (RN 4), was station agent there from 1893 to 1938. Brooklyn, N.Y. sports two Skillman Avenues and one Skillman Street. Dallas, TX has a Skillman Street. There is also a Skillman, KY. Click the links below for maps of these Skillman places. Picture is of Skillman Station before it was razed. More station pictures here.

In 1893 there was a train wreck at Skillman Station causing the telegraph operator, presumably my Grandfather, to faint!

Philip L. Parker from Skillman, N.J. died in the World Trade Center attack on 9/11/2001. No Skillmans are listed for that attack at theSkillman Station WTC, the Shanksville, PA crash or the Pentagon.

Skillman, Belle Mead, Blawenburg and Harlingen are unincorporated communities, a.k.a. census-designated places, in Montgomery Township, in Somerset County, NJ. Skillmans have lived in all these communities.

Skillman St., Dallas was named after William Francis Skillman, (RN 2569) a prominent Dallas banker. From just after Lindbergh's Atlantic solo to 2 days before the Pearl Harbor attack it was known as Lindbergh Street. In 1894 there was a fire in the Hopkins County Courthouse that damaged many buildings but the W.F. Skillman building was undamaged.

Robert H. and Rose P. Skillman branch of the Detroit Public Library. "The Rose and Robert Skillman (RN 5939) Branch of the Detroit Public Library, formerly called the Downtown Library (opened January 4, 1932), was renamed the Rose and Robert Skillman Branch Library to honor a generous gift from the Skillman Foundation."

Skillman Library, Lafayette College, Easton, PA was recently renovated and modernized. It should be noted that Lafayette is the gridiron arch rival of my alma mater, Lehigh Univ. in Bethlehem, PA. The library is named after an attorney, David Bishop Skillman (RN 752), 1887-1965, a 6th great grandson of Thomas, who received his Law Degree from Lafayette in 1913.

Hot news in October, 2017: Dog Park opens in Skillman Park

Skillman Furniture: Princeton, NJ. Very old business, started in either 1743 or 1863 by an unidentified Skillman. It remained in the family until 1959 when Leroy (Roy) Skillman (RN 6412) died. His stepson, Paul Oliver, and his brother, James, began operating the store in 1960.

Another Skillman Store, Skillman Brothers, has been in business since 1908 in Bemus Point, NY on Lake Chautauqua. Not clear which brothers started the store, but Lester J. (1882-1927) (RN 8649)  was the proprietor from 1908 to 1927. Frank Wm. Skillman (1895-1967) (RN 8653) was a merchant in Ellery, near Bemus Point. His son, Norman C., (RN 9324) (1927 to 2009) owned the store at some time. Current owner unknown.

Skillman Airport: the Trenton-Mercer Airport near Trenton, NJ, opened in 1929 as Skillman Airport. It was renamed after WW II. Reminds me of the airport in the TV series "Wings" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wings_%281990_TV_series%29. In that program was Tim Daly, brother of Tyne Daly (Lacey in the TV series Cagney and Lacey.) He is now starring in "Madame Secretary".

Eight inmates die in Toms River, N.J. jail fire. Toms River is a Skillman town in the sense that my future wife and I both grew up and attended school from 1st to 12th grade there. I passed the jail on the way to school when we lived on Madison Ave. House later demolished for County buildings.

September 8, 1934, Morro Castle burns off Jersey shore! Again, not a Skillman town but our family drove to Asbury Park to gawk at the burned out hulk that had been beached at Asbury Park, about 25 miles from Toms River. It had burned just off Asbury Park.

I was sitting alone in the family car parked in Asbury Park on Dec. 7, 1941 when I heard of the Pearl Harbor attack on the radio. My parents were shopping at the time.
