5030. Herbert Ellis Skillman was born on 9 January 1917 in Indianapolis, IN. He was educated from 1934 to 1936 at Indiana University in Indiana. He was educated from 1938 to 1939 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Tippecanoe, IN. Herbert served in the military from 7 September 1940 to 27 February 1946 in U.S. Navy. Enlisted in V-7 program at Indianapolis Naval Armory. Commissioned ensign May 15, 1941, following completion of reserve midshipman school at U.S. Naval Academy. Active duty at First Naval Dist. hdqtrs in Boston on Oct 23, 1941. Completed comm. duty and aviation training from 1941-43; served as eng. officer on destroyer escort U.S.S. Levy in Pacific from 1943-45; saw action at Bougainville, Palau Is, Admiralty Is. Marianas (Guam, Saipan) and the Philippines. In 1945, returned to States, assigned to the Navy Bd. of Inspection and Survey for the 8th Naval District. Released to inactive duty with rank of Lt. He died on 7 October 1993 at the age of 76 at St. Jos. Hospital Healthcenter in Kokomo, Howard, IN. Cause of death: congestive heart failure, coronary heart desease, end stage renal disease, non-insulin dependent diabetes. He was buried on 11 October 1993 at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN. Herbert lived in Greentown, Howard, IN in October 1993. He had Social Security Number 304-05-3845. He was an industrial engineer.
