283. Christopher Skillman was born in 1801 in Virginia. Mormon Archive Record has birth place Alabama. He died on 3 January 1846 at the age of 45 in Jacinto, Tishomingo, MS. A KILLING AT JACINTO
Christopher Skillman killed by Robert Hyneman in a street fight. On the afternoon of January 3, 1846, a fatal altercation occurred between Robert H. Hyneman and Christopher Skillman, which resulted in the death of the latter. From the evidence given before the coroner's jury it appears that several people were in the drinking department of J.W. Patrick's grocery, when Hyneman entered and invited all present except Skillman to drink with him. Skillman was greatly incensed at thus being slighted, and walking to the bar, called for a drink, saying that he was able to pay for his own drink, at the same time referring to Hyneman as a "d---d scoundrel", and inviting him outside to settle the matter. Both parties left the house, and when in the street Hyneman picked up a small piece of wood, which he threw at Skillman, who secured the missile and threw it back at Hyneman, following it up with a four-pound scale weight, which struck Hyneman in the back, felling him to the ground. Before Hyneman could regain his feet, Skillman was upon him. Hyneman succeeded in getting away from Skillman, and, drawing a revolver and knife, started toward Skillman, who picked up a piece of scantling with which to defend himself. Hyneman rushed upon Skillman, and, striking him with the knife, wounded him in the hand and at the second thrust drove the knife into Skillman's forehead, from which wound he died in a few minutes. At the March term of court, Hyneman was tried on a charge of murder, but was acquitted. Hyneman was later killed in a street fight at Ripley.
