Skillman, proprietor of a general store at Bemus Point for the past nineteen years, died at 5:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon at his home at Bemus Point, aged 44 years, 6 months and 7 days. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Leah Skillman; two sons, Lawrence and Lester, Jr.; two daughters, Genevieve and Elinor, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Mary Skillman of Bemus Point; two brothers, William Skillman of Canisteo and David Skillman of Warren, Pa.; three sisters, Mrs. Arvis Justice of Rochester, Mrs. Esther Carpenter of Spencerport and Miss Mary Skillman of Bemus Point. The funeral will be held from the Methodist Episcopal Church at Bemus Point, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Mr. Skillman was the son of Rev. David S. Skillman of the Methodist Protestant Church, who passed on some years ago and of Mrs. Mary A. Skillman and was united in marriage with Miss Leah Hart of Genesee, Pa., on Aug. 29, 1906. ....Mr. Skillman was a member of the grocery firm of Frank and Skillman prior to his marriage and later the firm name was Skillman and Ingerson. Upon the death of Marion Ingerson of the firm the business was acquired by members of the family and the name changed to L. J. Skillman and Company and has been so known since 1916. The deceased was a member of the local Methodist Episcopal Church, a Mason and an Odd Fellow and a charter member of the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department and had served as superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School, as trustee of the village and of the public schools and at the time of his death was a trustee of the church. Always taking an active part in public affairs, especially the church and the schools, Lester Skillman will be sadly missed in the community where he had been also the leading merchant for so many years. The church was filled to capacity for the service, seldom has a funeral been so largely attended in the village, this again attesting the respect and esteem in which Mr. Skillman was held by all who knew him both in the village and the surrounding country districts.
