She died on 27 March 1972 at the age of 94 in Huntersville, Mecklenburg, NC. Her father was a German immigrant, and her mother was the daughter of German immigrants. Bertha was an 1897 graduate of Hunter College in New York City. She spoke 5 languages and was fluent in English and German. She traveled to Europe three times during her life. Before marriage to Robert and during the first couple of years of marriage, Bertha was a school teacher in Staten Island, NY. Her hobbies included compiling the Stewart genealogy of her husband back to Scottish kings and compiling a book of her favorite poems and sayings. She was raised Catholic, became a follower of Christian Science during her middle-aged years, and then as a senior citizen became an Evangelical Christian in Charlotte, as a member of the inter-denominational,Pentecostal congregation of Garr Memorial Church. She was buried on 29 Mar 1972 in Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC. Bertha was buried on 29 March 1972 at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC.
