He served in the military as a First Lieutenant from 3 October 1861 to 10 April 1866 in the Union Army. Enlisted Oct. 1861 3rd Minn. Inf., made 1st Lt. of Co. G. Soon commissioned regimental quartermaster. Captured July, 1862 at Murfreesboro, TN, and returned home. went on an expedition against the Sioux on Red River, and was in several skirmishes with them at Fort Abercrombie. After being exchanged, he returned to the south, and was detailed in the early spring of 1864, as quartermaster of the 113th U.S. regt. of colored soldiers. He participated in the capture of Vicksburg and Little Rock, and in the battle of Fitzhugh's woods, on the White river. After the close of the war of the rebellion, he served on the Texas frontier, and was discharged on April 6, 1866. From Dee Ann Skillman: Evander Skillman and Electa Cassie Lont were married on 1 August 1865 in Wabasha, Wabasha, MN. Electa Cassie Lont, daughter of Elijah Lont and Martha A. Conick, was born on 6 April 1847. She died on 10 November 1916 at the age of 69. She was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Livingston, Park, MT.
