2725. Capt. John Henry Skillman was born on 22 November 1893 in Kansas City, Jackson, MO. He served in the military between 27 December 1910 and 1 March 1948 in U.S. Navy. Aboard the USS California which sank at Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. He received a commendation for outstanding service. He also served in WW 1, enlisting on 12/27/1910. He advanced to warrant officer and a commissioned officer in 1917. He also received a commendation for his outstanding work as commander of the San Diego Supply depot during the war years. He enlisted at the USS West Virginia at Hilo, Hawaii on 8/26/1914. He served on the USS St. Louis from 4/6/1917 to 7/20/1917 as Chief Yeoman. He was appointed officer 7/20/1917. He was given an honorable discharge on 10/4/1919 at the Naval Prison, Parris Island, S.C. His service number was 192-59-79 (Mo. State Archives' Soldiers Database : War of 1812-World War I.) He received a MBA degree in 1928. John died on 8 June 1956 at the age of 62 at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, Alameda, CA. Cause of death: infarction myocardium and arteriosclerotic heart disease. (death cert., Alameda Co., CA.)
He was a patient at the Oak Knoll Naval Hosp. in Oakland the last seven weeks of a three month illness.(Carmel Pine Cone-Cymbal, Thurs., June 14, 1956.) Capt. John Henry Skillman and Edith Grace Barton were married on 10 June 1938 in Berkeley, CA. Edith Grace Barton, daughter of Samuel Forrest Barton and Lolita Welch, was born on 21 March 1912 in Seattle, King, WA. Between 1957 and 1977 she was a Secretary to the Superintendent at Carmel Unified School District in Carmel, Monterey, CA. She lived in Carmel, Monterey, CA on 16 May 1987. Edith died on 16 May 1987 at the age of 75 in Pacific Grove, Monterey, CA. Obit in Bellingham Herald, Tues., May 19, 1987.

EDITH GRACE SKILLMAN

Edith Grace Skillman of Pacific Grove, a retired secretary to the superintendent of the Carmel Unified School District, died Saturday - She was 75.

Mrs. Skillman was born March 21, 1912, in Seattle, Washington, and had lived on the Monterey eninsula for the past 40 years. Mrs. Skillman was a secetary for the Carmel school district from 1957-1977. She was a member of thte Embroider's Guild of America.

She is survived by a daughter, Lita Hardy of Santa Cruz; a brother, Herbert Barton of Lafayette; and two granddaughters.

A gathering of family and friends is scheduled form 1 p.m. Thursday in the Paul Mortuary. Private graveside services will be Friday in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California.
