Promoted to Full Hospital Steward on 16 March 1863.
Received a disability discharge on 15 June 1863.
New York: Report of the Adjutant-General. (NYRoster) Pub. 1894-1906. In 1880 he was a farmer in Smithville Flats, Chenango, NY. Joseph was buried in 1900 at Skillman family plot, Upper, Old Cemetery in Smithville Flats, Chenango, NY. He died on 16 November 1900 at the age of 62 in New York. Picture of his headstone is difficult to read, but appears to be Nov 16, 1900. Earlier date of Jan 9, 1900 may be the date for another Joseph Hudson living in New York City. He was a member of the Assembly in New York.

Joseph Hudson Skillman and Lettie B. Cline were married on 1 January 1866. Lettie B. Cline was born in 1840. She died in 1887 at the age of 47. She was buried in Smithville Flats, Chenango, NY.

Joseph Hudson Skillman and Lydia E. "Lettie" Ballard were married in 1889. They appeared in the census in 1900 in Smithville Flats, Chenango, NY. Lydia E. "Lettie" Ballard, daughter of Erasmus Ballard and Tamison Unknown, was born in January 1835 in New York. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Triangle, Broome Co., NY. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Triangle, Broome Co., NY. She was a housekeeper in the 1870 census. Lettie appeared in the census in 1910 in Smithville Flats, Chenango, NY. She appeared in the census in 1920 at 181 Main St. in Smithville Flats, Chenango, NY. She died in 1925 at the age of 90. Lettie was buried in 1925 at Upper Lisle Cemetery B-6 64 in Upper Lisle, Broome, NY. Lydia was the fifth child and third daughter for Erasmus and Tamison. She moved to Nebraska when her older brother Harlow and family left New York for Nebraska. She purchased 80 acres of property next to Harlow's property in Nebraska. Her first and only marriage was to Joseph Hudson Skillman in 1889. He was a widower; his first wife was Jettie B. Cline; his children Ida May, Lizzie and Henry Elwyn. He died in 1900 and is buried in the Smithville family plot where his father, mother and first wife are buried.
