He wanted to "go home" and would take off if he wasn't being watched. In 1917 Charles Sr. bought Maplehurst farm for $6,000. Charles farmed both farms for a while, than rented the "Turkey Farm" to Maruts. He later sold the "Turkey Farm" in the early 1920's. Charles and Cornelia would have relatives & friends come to visit them during the summer. During the winter they would visit back and forth with another Pleasant Valley family, the George Woodens. During summers, the Burd children would play with the Wooden children. Charles, Jr. remembers Gladys Wooden being like a big sister to him. She would help him find the best hiding places while playing "hide and seek". Charles Sr. always had them trim the osage orange hedge along the road 2 times each summer. The hedge went from where the picnic grounds are now to where the ski lift is now. Every once in a while as they were trimming, they would get into a bees nest. This was a good fence for keeping the cows in the road as they were being driven up from the meadow. Charles Sr. liked to foxhunt. When he developed diabetes, the doctor said that if his foot froze it would have to be amputated. Gid and Walt had to sell his hound dogs to keep him from going hunting.
