Eleventh Generation

10354. Capt. Roger Perry Skillman was born on 6 July 1933 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, OH. He died on 5 March 1967 at the age of 33. Died in a crash of the plane he was piloting for Lake Central Airlines. Obit in Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cleveland Necrology File, Roll #156, Cleveland Pub. Lib. #ID 0726402.

His son Mark informed me that he was flying a Lake Central airplane, not Allegany Airlines. An AP story in the New York Times for March 7, 1967 confirms this. All 38 occupants were killed.

The crash was caused by the omission of nitriding of a crucial part in the propeller drive mechanism which caused a loss of oil to the right propeller which subsequently overspeeded and the blades separated from the hub. One blade effectively sliced the fuselage in half causing it to crash with loss of all 38 on board.

He had Social Security Number 269-26-4727. Issued before 1951 in Ohio. He was a commercial pilot for Lake Central Airlines. From Charlie Skillman, Lockland:

George Skillman Lockland grad of 1920 and wife Mary Vogel Skillman had a son Roger Skillman who was a pilot. Roger had a friend also a pilot call him and ask if he was exchange or fill in for him as he had a wedding to go to. Roger flew in this buddies place and as chance would have it he died in a plane crash that he wasn't supposed to be on to begin with. That pilot he filled in for stayed in touch with George and Mary Skillman for years as I am guessing that he felt so bad that a friend doing him a favor died as a result. We just never know what our fate might be in life. Strangely or coincidental as it might be Roger had a son Mark Skillman who became a pilot. He flew for US Airlines and on one of his inspections of his flew something hit him when he was on the ground and put his eye out. Roger had two more sons and a daughter by his second wife. I never met Roger but did meet George and Mary Skillmans other two sons George Jr and John W Skillman. I think Roger was a Lockland boy but they moved away before he finished high school or maybe when he was in grade school or not at all. When his father George who worked for Richardson Company of Lockland promoted George he then moved to Cleveland and then Chicago and then back to Middletown where he retired from.
Posted by his son, Roger, on FaceBook on Veterans Day, 2015:

My dad, Roger P. Skillman, was a US Air Force vet from the Korean War. In a not so strange series of events... My dad volunteered to join the Ohio Air National Guard when he was 17 and still in high school (Lakewood High School, Lakewood, Ohio). When Korea War broke out, his unit was activated, and he was shipped off without completing high school. He never traveled overseas, but his unit flew A-26 aircraft in a tactical photo recon squadron and he was stationed around the southeast at a variety of airfields. He became an aircraft mechanic and crew chief rising to the rank of Sgt. He took much of his Air Force pay and bought flying lessons at King Aviation in Columbus, GA. I have his old logbooks and its funny to see the names of the towns he flew to in GA, NC, SC, and FL. After he was released from active duty, he bought an old Curtis Jenny Biplane and flew home to Lakewood where he graduated high school 2 years behind his class.
