Richard K. Skillman, 59, of 290 Cooley St., a former professor and department chair at Western New England College, died June 11 at home.
He was chairman of the Department of Economics from 1990 to 1996. He was previously chairman of the Department of History, Government and Economics from 1981 to 1990. He began his career at the college as associate professor of economics in 1970. He was instrumental in bringing a credit union to the college in 1974. He also served for many years on the Personnel Committee of the faculty senate and played a major role in the first rewrite of the college's Faculty Handbook in 1980.
He lived in Springfield since 1970 and received a bachelor's degree in economics from Hamilton College and a master of arts in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
He leaves his mother, Vera E. (Hurt) Skillman of Dunedin, Fla.
A memorial service will be in the fall at the college. Sampson's Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home is in charge.
