Skillman, 72, a merchant here for almost half a century and a veteran of World War I, died at 7 p.m. Friday (Aug. 18, 1967) at WCA Hospital. Mr. Skillman also had served 18 years as treasurer of the Village. Until his retirement in 1963, he operated Skillman Brothers General Store for 36 years. Prior to that time the business was known as L. J. Skillman and Co., for 12 years. He was born Aug. 15, 1895, in the Town of Ellery, the son of John E. and Jessie Fisher Skillman. He was a member of the Bemus Point Methodist Church, was a charter member of Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department; the Fire Police and Ellery American Legion Post No. 947; a member of the Penn Yann Hunting Club; and formerly was active in Boy Scouts, serving as a committeeman for many years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Cheney Skillman; two sons, John E. Skillman, Lafayette, Calif., and Norman C. Skillman, Bemus Point; two brothers, Sherman D. Skillman and Elmer L. Skillman, both of Bemus Point; eight grandchildren; an aunt, Miss Mary Skillman, of Westfield, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Bemus Point Methodist Church. The Rev. Sheldon Peterson, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Charles Aldrich. Committal will be in Bemus Point Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Evans Funeral home, Bemus Point, is in charge of arrangements. Frank had Social Security Number 053-28-9618. She was born July 29, 1895, in Bemus Point, a daughter of Morris and Anna Weaver Cheney. Mrs. Skillman was a fourth-grade teacher for Canajoharie Grade School and later at Bemus Point Elementary School. She was a member of Bemus Point United Methodist Church and was a past member of Bemus Point School Board, Bemus Point Study Club and a past trustee of Bemus Point Library. She was also instrumental in setting up Chautauqua/Cattaraugus Library system. She was a charter member of Bemus Point PTA and Bemus Point American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are a son, Norman Skillman of Bemus Point; eight grandchildren: Cynthia Mask of Auburn, Ala., Janice Rotkis, Carol Skillman and Marcia Skillman, all Seattle, Wash., Diane Skillman of Oakland, Calif., Suzanne Crain of Monterey, Calif., Gary Skillman of Caper, Wyoming, Janice Soss of Hayward, Calif.; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Miller of Fredonia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Skillman, whom she married Sept. 16, 1919, in Bemus Point, and who died July 1967; a son, John Skillman, January 1971; and a brother, Gerald Cheney. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bemus Point United Methodist Church. The Rev. Daniel McBride, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. Visitation will not be observed. Arrangements are by Hubert Funeral Home. She was buried at Bemus Point Cemetery in Bemus Point, Chatauqua, NY. Ruth had Social Security Number 063-52-3237 NY.
