WHILE IN THE SERVICE HE SERVED WITH THE 729TH RAILWAY OPERATING BATTALION IN THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATION. HE WAS AWARDED THE BRONZE STAR FOR HIS SERVICE AS NIGHT YARDMASTER IN ANTWERP, BELGIUM. THE 729TH PARTICIPATED IN CAMPAIGNS IN NORMANDY, NORTHERN FRANCE, THE RHINELAND, AND CENTRAL EUROPE.

Harold Skillman PRINCETON - Harold Skillman, 91, died Saturday at Princeton Medical Center. Born in Skillman, NJ, Mr. Skillman had been a lifelong resident. He served his country in the United States Army. Prior to entering the military he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. While in the service he served with the 729th Railway Operating Battalion in the European theater of operation. Mr. Skillman was awarded the Bronze Star for his service as night yardmaster in Antwerp, Belgium, during World War II. After completing his military service, Mr. Skillman worked for Permacel in quality control for 39 years. He was an elder in the Blawenburg Reformed Church, where he was a member all his life. Mr. Skillman was also a member and past chief of Montgomery Twp. Volunteer Fire Company 2 . Preceded in death by his parents, Frederic and Elva Skillman, and sisters, Reba Baird and Mary Van Cleef, he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean W. Skillman; son, Thomas Skillman and his wife, Shirley, of Stevens Point, WI, and their children, Kristen, Jennifer and Alison Skillman, and Tracy Skillman-Anderson and her husband, Joe; son, Jeffrey Skillman and his wife, Mirah, of Roosevelt, NJ, and their children, Susan and Sarah Skillman. Mr. Skillman is also survived by his brothers, Thomas S. Skillman of Skillman, NJ, and A. Dix Skillman of Princeton, NJ. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Blawenburg Reformed Church, 424 Rt. 518, Skillman, NJ, with Rev. Richard Van Doren officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cromwell-Immordino Memorial Home, 71 E. Prospect St., Hopewell, NJ 08525. Harold was buried on 16 December 2009 at Blawenburg Reformed Church Cemetery in Blawenburg, Montgomery Twp., Somerset, NJ. He had Social Security Number 154-07-9311.
