7078. Raymond Charles Skillman was born on 24 July 1924 in Valley Springs, SD. From 1942 to 1947 he was a brakeman and section hand. From 1947 to 1948 he was a worker at Beatrice Foods in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha, SD. From 1948 to 1971 Raymond was a worker at Swalve Produce, in George, SD. From 1971 to May 1976 he was a worker at hatchery in Garritson, SD. From May 1976 to 1978 he was a worker. From 1978 to May 1981 Raymond was a custodian. Raymond Charles Skillman was born July 24, 1924 at Valley Springs, South Dakota, the son of Merritt and Inga (Running) Skillman. He attended school at Valley Springs. After his education he worked for the railroad as a brakeman and a section had, repairing the tracks. On February 15, 1947, Raymond was united in marriage to Leona Stubbe in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
After their marriage Raymond and Leona moved to Sioux Falls where he worked for Beatrice Foods. In December of 1948, they moved to George and he worked for Swalve Produce for twenty-three years. As work became slow, he moved to Garritson, South Dakota to work for the hatchery there. In May of 1976 he started working as a custodian for the Brandon Valley School system. In 1978 he switched schools and started working for the Harrisburg School until October of 1981 when he retired due to health problems. During their retired years together Raymond and Leona lived in Worthing, South Dakota, Ellsworth, Minnesota and Rock Rapids, Iowa.
Raymond loved to give people a hard time and especially enjoyed raising rabbits and taking them to rabbit shows. In November of 1997 Raymond’s health was declining and he moved to the Ah Gwah Ching Center in Ah Gwah Ching, Minnesota for special care. Raymond died this past Tuesday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids, Minnesota at the age of seventy-three.
Raymond is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Leona Skillman of Rock Rapids, Iowa; three daughters, Judy (Gary) Meester of Ellsworth, Minnesota, Earleen “Lynn” (Ron) Hinrichs of Ellsworth, Minnesota and Laureen (Norbert Sr.) Fick of Luverne, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Dawn Van Den Top of George, Iowa, Larry Meester of Ellsworth, Minnesota, Judy Hinrichs of Ellsworth, Minnesota, Shawn Fick of Vermillion, South Dakota, Daniel Fick of Luverne, Minnesota, Norbert Fick, Jr. of Vermillion, South Dakota, Chris Hinrichs of Ellsworth, Minnesota and Nick Meester of Ellsworth, Minnesota along with seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Norman Skillman of Valley Springs, South Dakota; James and SM Skillman of Galesburg, Illinois and one sister, Elizabeth Gilbertson; a special friend, Gert. R. Broesder and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merritt and Inga; four brothers, Al, Rolland, Lyle, and Clifford Skillman; and one sister, Dorthea Burns.
Funeral services for Raymond Skillman were held on Sunday, May 31, 1998 at the Roste Funeral Home, Rock Rapids, Iowa with interment in Evergreen Lawn C
emetery, west of George, Iowa. He was buried on 31 May 1998 at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA. Burial may have been SD, not IA. Raymond had Social Security Number 720-05-7622 RR.

Raymond Charles Skillman and Leona Mae Stubbe were married on 15 February 1947 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha, SD. Leona Mae Stubbe, daughter of Henry H. Stubbe and Bessie Mae Mammenga, was born on 17 September 1928 in George, IA. She died on 19 October 2004 at the age of 76 at Parkview Manor in Ellsworth, MN. Obit in Argus Leader (Sioux Falls, SD), 10/21/2004.

Leona Mae Skillman, 76, Rock Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 19, 2004, at Parkview Manor in Ellsworth. Services were Friday, October 22, at Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids. The Rev. Robert Raedeke officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, George, Iowa.

Leona Stubbe was born to Henry H. and Bessie M. (Mammenga) Stubbe on September 17, 1928, at George, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near George. She was baptized at Hope Reformed Church in George. She graduated from George High School.

She married Raymond Skillman on February 15, 1947, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After their marriage the couple made their home in Sioux Falls for a short time, and in December 1948 they moved to George. She worked for Swalve Produce for several years. Later, the couple moved to Garretson, South Dakota and worked in a hatchery. From Garretson they moved to Brandon, South Dakota and later to Harrisburg, South Dakota, where they worked as custodians. She later took a job at Brimark Inn in Sioux Falls and worked there until she retired in 1987. During their retirement they lived in Ellsworth and Rock Rapids. Mr. Skillman died May 26, 1998. She moved to Parkview Manor October 13, 2004.

Mrs. Skillman enjoyed raising and showing rabbits, watching baseball, fishing trips, playing bingo, growing violets and raising Chinese Pugs.

Survivors include three children, Judy (Gary) Meester and Earleen "Lynn" (Ron) Hinrichs, Ellsworth, and Laureen (Norbert Sr.) Fick, Luverne; eight grandchildren, dawn (Mike) Van Den top, Rock Rapids, Larry (Gwen) Meester, Jody (Merrily) Hinricks, Chris (Ray) Palmer, all of Ellsworth, Shawn (Shelley) Fick, Vermillion, South Dakota, Daniel (Ellen) Fick, Olivia, Norbert Jr. (Katie) Fick and Dominic Meester, Sioux Falls; 10 great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; one brother, Lawrence Stubbe, George; and one sister Jayne Early, Sioux Falls, Iowa. Mrs. Skillman was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond and one sister, Betty. Roste Funeral Home, Rock Rapids, was in charge of the arrangements. She was buried after 22 October 2004 at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA.
