8475. Henry Howson "Hank" Skillman Sr. was born on 1 August 1926 in West Chester, Delaware, PA. He served in the military between 13 December 1944 and 6 August 1946 in U.S. Navy. Seaman first class, S.I.C. electronics technician, class 1945. Later served in the Reserve, achieving the rank of Ensign. He was educated B.S. General Engineering in 1950 at Mass. Inst. of Technology in Boston, Suffolk, MA. Hank was educated LLB in 1954 at Temple Univ. in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. He was a member and treasurer for 35 years from 1955 to 8 March 2015 at Calvary Lutheran Church in West Chester, Delaware, PA. He was educated JD in 1960 at Temple Univ. in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. From 1974 to 2013 Hank was a Lawyer at Dann, Dorfmann, Herrell and Skillman in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA. Admitted to Penna. bar, 1955, registered to practice before U.S. patent and Trademark Office. Member Phila & Amer. Bar Assns, Am. Intellectual Property Law Assn., Phila Intellectual property Law Assn (Memb., Bd of Gov 1977-79; Am. Soc. of Inventors (Treasurer 1972-) He died on 8 March 2015 at the age of 88 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.
Henry Howson Skillman of West Chester died at the Hospital at University of Pennsylvania on Sunday March 8, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 1, 1926 in West Chester to Willis Rowland Skillman and Clara Louise Howson. He attended West Chester public schools, Westtown School and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy. He served in the Navy in 1945 to 1946 and later in the reserves, achieving the rank of Ensign. He earned his B.S. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a J.D. from Temple University. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar. In 1954, he married Josephine Evelyn Kopchany, a nurse originally from Uniontown, Pa.; he was devoted to Jody and she survives him. He practiced patent law first at Howson & Howson, a firm started by his great-grandfather and continued by his grandfather. In 1974 he and his partners founded the firm Dann Dorfman Herrell and Skillman. The firm grew under his leadership. He retired in 2013. Hank worshiped at Calvary Lutheran Church since 1955. He served as its treasurer for 35 years. He served on the Executive Board of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Lutheran Church of America and as Secretary of the Board of the Lutheran Retirement Homes in Philadelphia. He served on the advisory board and was the Treasurer of the American Society of Inventors in Philadelphia. The Society provides support for small business and amateur inventors. Hank was their champion. Hank loved his family and was companionable to his friends. He worked to impart his values of hard work and frugality to his children. He enjoyed his house in Mountainhome, Pa. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a Republican of the old school who believed that there are men of good will in both parties. He was active in the Theta Delta Chi International Fraternity. Hank’s spirit lives on in his children, David R. Skillman, Henry H. Skillman, Jr. , Amy S. Burton, Jan M. Moore and Marc S. Skillman, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Margaret Woyski. The will be a visitation at 1 p.m. this Saturday, March 14 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 730 South New Street, West Chester. A memorial service will follow. Mr. Skillman, now retired, concentrated his practice in representation of individuals and U.S. and foreign business organizations in the preparation, filing and prosecution of patent, trademark and copyright applications, and counseling and opinions regarding infringement and validity, and related matters.
Mr. Skillman received his B.S. in General Engineering with a specialty in textile technology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his J.D. from Temple University and was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1955.
Mr. Skillman, a fourth-generation patent attorney, practiced of patent, trademark and copyright law as a patent and trademark agent and an attorney since 1950 and served the Philadelphia and American Intellectual Property Law Associations as well as the Section of Intellectual Property Law of the American Bar Association as Chairman of their respective committees on practice before the Patent and Trademark Office and has written articles relative to the Patent Office Rules of Practice. Mr. Skillman served on the Executive Board of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Lutheran Church of America and as Secretary of the Board of the Lutheran Retirement Homes in Philadelphia, and, for 35 years, was Treasurer of Calvary Lutheran Church in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Mr. Skillman serves on the advisory board and is the Treasurer of the American Society of Inventors in Philadelphia. Mr. Skillman is listed in Who’s Who in American Law.
