A, Forrest's famous Confederate cavalry, with which he served until the spring of 1862, when he was transferred to the First Kentucky Cavalry under Col. (afterward General) Ben Hardin Helm. He served in that regiment until Sept., when he was discharged, having served the time for which he enlisted, on account of physical disability. In 1863 he joined Gen. John Morgan and took part in his raid through Indiana and Ohio. Escaping capture he returned to Hardinsburg and srurendered to the Federal authorities in order to prevent his father being held as a hostage; he was sent as a prisoner to Louisville and denied the priveiege of exchange. This was owing to a charge made against him of holding a Lieutenant-colonel's commissin to recruit within the Federal lines. The accusation was wholly without foundaton, but was believed by many to be true. His only purpose was to make his way back to Gen. Helm's command and volunteer on that officer's staff.
