7568. Lillian Carlisle Mangus was born on 23 March 1913 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, OH. She died in January 1986 at the age of 72 in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. My mother used the name of Carlisle, but neither Wayne nor I had been able to determine why. We know that her father, Frank, went through several marriages. According to Bill Mangus of Western, Ohio as many as 5. I met Frank and his current wife "Babe" in Cobourg Ontario in 1960 or 1961 and mother said that he was last seen on a highway in BC. Ina Murdoch was actually her paternal grandmother and on the 3X5 index card showing the family, she is listed as Ina (Carlisle below with a line before) Murdoch. At this point we are not certain if Ina was previously married or remarried after her husband William's death.
We do know from mother that she did not live with Frank for long, and it is possible that Ina remarried and had already took mother in. Wayne believes that she was taken in by a Baptist minister, perhaps Ina's new husband which could account for the insert of Carlisle which does seem to be an afterthought.

Mystery solved. Michael Mahaney sent me an e-mail in stating that he found William Mangus in the 1920 census as single. Then he found Ina and Lillian Carlisle, along with Inabelle Mangus on the 1920 census where Ina is listed as the wife of William H. Carlisle. My mother was adopted and hence the use of the name Carlisle.I have since located and copied the same records.

Lillian never forgot the wonderful reception she received from my grandmother upon dad's announcement of his engagement. When I told her in May 1965 that I had proposed to Cathy, she immediately asked me to send Cathy to her as she wished to make her feel as welcome to the family as had my grandparents. I now know why!
