Donald J. Skillman died peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 20, 2004, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Gary, Indiana on August 19, 1939 and was raised in Lowell, Indiana. After serving in the United States Marine Corps and attending Northwestern University, he began his career as Division Manager for White Advertising in Lincoln, Nebraska. He then served as Executive Vice President of the Home Builders Association of Lincoln and in 1965 moved to San Antonio to serve as Executive Vice President of the Greater San Antonio Builders Association. He later became President of Karren Mortgage Company. He spent the last years of his career as owner of Don Skillman and Associates, a commercial Real Estate and Mortgage brokerage firm. Mr. Skillman was a Life Director for the National Association of Home Builders, Past President of Mortgage Bankers Association of San Antonio, Past President of Mortgage Administration of San Antonio, Director of Greater San Antonio Builders Association, Senior Member of Review Appraisers, Director of Texas Association of Home Builders. He was named Outstanding Association Executive by the National Association of Home Builders, Outstanding Young Businessman by Texas Business and awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Texas in San Antonio.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Skillman and his mother, Rose Parks Skillman. He is survived by his loving wife, Emily Skillman; daughter, Stacie Skillman Banack and husband, Emerson (Trey) Banack III; son, Michael J. Skillman of Warwick, R.I.; his extended family includes his brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. We will miss Donald's wonderful sense of humor along with the strength and courage he displayed through difficult times.

He served in the military in U.S. Marines. Don was buried at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio, Bexar, TX.
