Sixth Generation

290. Elijah Bolton Skillman was born in 1818 in Tennessee. He died in September 1854 at the age of 36 in Tishomingo Co., MS.

Elijah Bolton Skillman and Martha Jane "Patsy" Noble appeared in the census in 1850 in Tippah Co., MS. They were married. My wife Reba, my niece Kathy Grace, cousin Earl Clem and I, have researched the Tuttle and Pennington family since discovering our Noble family connection about two years ago. My niece Kathy came upon the Rod Pennington site and forwarded it on to me to help her research. The Mary Pennington Noble you speak of is the daughter of Jacob Pennington and granddaughter of Abraham Pennington - I believe is my 4th great-grandmother. This Mary Noble is believed to be the daughter of Mary Tuttle and Jacob Pennington.

I am a great-great-great-grandson of Reverend John Noble, born abt. 1788 and Sarah Holloway (daughter of William Holloway) all from Spartanburg, South Carolina through their daughter Martha (Patsy) Noble, born circa 1826 - she married Elijah B. Skillman abt. 1840-42; Elijah and Martha (Noble) Skillman settled in Tishomingo, Mississippi. The couple had five children: (1) Sarah Ann Lucinda, circa 1842; (2) Isaac Thomas, circa 1845 (my great-grandfather); (3) Mary Ann, circa 1847; (4) Lydia Ann Emeline, circa 1850; and Elijah Bolton, Jr., circa 1852. Her husband died in 1852 in Tishomingo and she returned to DeKalb County, Alabama. There she resided with her father John Noble. Martha married (2) Hiram Nations, in 1856 (the couple had no issue.) Hiram Nations, died in 1861 and remained a widow. Martha died on April 22, 1909 in Alabama City, Etowah, Alabama.

All the Skillman children remained in Etowah and surrounding counties with the exception of Sarah Ann Lucinda (Mrs. Herring) who migrated to Arkansas - Earl Clem is a descendent.

We know little on the Tuttle, Pennington and Noble families, and have been unable to verify the parents of John Noble. John and his brother Charles Pennington Noble were orphaned as children and adopted by two brothers named Brown (Aries and Lewis) - John Noble named a son Bennett Noble - John Nobles' brother was Pennington Noble which leads me to believe his mother was a Pennington (possibility this is Mary Tuttle.) The Noble and Holloway families came from South Carolina so did Tuttle's and Pennington's. William Holloway (father-in-law) of John Noble had another daughter who married Vincent Bennett. It would appear the Tuttle's, Pennington's, Noble's, Holloway's, and Bennett's traveled and intermarry.

As mentioned above, Mary Tuttle (Cherokee) as a the possible wife of Jacob Pennington. This would align our old family stories and help explain Martha (Noble) Skillman being Cherokee Indian. Mary Tuttle would be her great-grandmother.

Our cousins Earl and Carol Clem (in Arkansas) said their grandmother, Sarah Ann Lucinda (Skillman) Herring was very dark skinned and had dark hair and dark eyes. In my family, Isaac Thomas Skillman, their son, had native influenced was dominant. The family always said we were Native American.

Does anyone have new information to verify the Mary Tuttle theory? Or know of any Native American history in the Noble, Holloway and Bennett or other related families?

Any information that can be provided would be appreciated. I will gladly share research material to verify this connection.
