Changes in America lifestyles were reflected in Norfolk which was unaware of the extent of its own contributions to the new modes. The habit of eating on the run, for example, owed something to Fred Phillips, a deputy constable in 1946, who in 1908 suggested to a peanut-butter firm, BOSMAN and LOHMAN at Norfolk and (Western's Granby Street Crossing) that it market its product between crackers. The company let him hire 4 women to give door to door samples of peanut-sandwiches.
The response led the company to assign him it's New Jersey territory where consumers thought peanuts grew above ground like grapes. But they liked his sandwiches and National Biscuit Co. soon sent Phillips an order for 30 thousand, placing the little sandwich in the big time.
Peanut-butter itself, was concocted in St.Louis, owed much to ROBERT I. BOSMAN and Julius G. Lohman, the first to make and distribute it nationally. They founded their company on Commercial Place in 1891 to manufacture candy and other confections, but began making peanut butter with a sausage grinder as soon as they heard about it. Their product marketed as Nut-Let became the "best know brand in the world".
BOSMAN and Lohman made tons at a time at the Ganby Street factory they occupied in 1902. BOSMAN and Lohman discontinued operation in 1920s leaving the field to Skippy in Portsmouth and Planter's, among others.
