Harold was born on July 5, 1922,in Skillman, NJ, to Irvin and Florence Swan Whitenack.

Harold attended grammar school in Skillman, Somerset Co., NJ.  In his late teen years Harold attended Montrose Bible Conference Camp guided by a dear friend and neighbor and there turned his heart and life over to Jesus.  A favorite quote of his was, “The world thinks I am dreaming, but I know ‘tis Jesus.”   He made the decision to study at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, but soon enlisted at Great Lakes, IL in the Navy.  Harold trained in Boston, MA, and at the Hospital Corps School in Bainbridge, MD.  He then studied and graduated Pharmacy 3rd class at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, NH. Harold was sent to the Naval Air Station in Brunswick, ME where he finished his training as Pharmacist 2nd class.  He served onboard a Naval fleet ship in the Russell Islands of Mbanika, just before the bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan and the close of WW II.  He returned from the war to attend Moody Bible Institute.  Following his marriage to his first wife, Betty, in 1946, and his graduation from Moody Bible Institute in 1949, the Whitenacks followed God’s call in January 1953 to Tanganyika, East Africa as missionaries with African Inland Mission.  After Betty’s home going, Harold returned to the states with three little girls and soon married Emily, a single missionary who had recently returned from serving as a missionary nurse in Honduras.

Harold was a carpenter in Africa and continued in that field joining Local 548 Carpenter’s Union, settling down and working in the Philadelphia area, raising his four daughters and attending his home church, Aldan Union Church. His love for the people of Africa and the furthering of the Gospel there, led him to continue to make several trips to Kenya, Africa to do special building projects there.

In retirement, Harold had a home built on a hill with a beautiful view in rural Auburn and enjoyed gardening.  He and Emily moved to their wonderful apartment at Tel Hai overlooking David Stoltzfus’ working dairy farm 16 years ago.  This gave him many hours of entertainment, returning him to memories of his childhood and his father’s farm.  It gave Harold great pleasure to deliver mail to the Skilled Care Unit where he would often take time to read mail to the residents.  He also purchased half of the pair of swans placed on the lake at Tel Hai and cared for them with corn and a nesting box.

He was preceded in death by wives, Ruth Elizabeth Shute (Betty) in 1961, Emily Louise Robinson in 2000 and by an infant great grandson.  He is survived by his wife, Lillie G.
