From obit in The Friday Noon:
With his twin brother, Stephen, James Skillman enlisted on Sept. 23, 1861, at Reading, Ohio, in Company A, 73th Volunteer Infantry, was trained at Camp McLean (1 mile south of Glendale), received his first baptism under fire at Cheat Mountain several months later. He participated in some of the Civil War's bloodiest battles.
On the morning of July 1, 1863, he went into the fray at Gettysburg on the first day of battle. By his side was twin brother Stephen. Unusual it is that throughout their three years and four months of war service, as thoughout their lives, they were united, inseparable.
Not until the close of the War did these twin veterans move to Middletown, establish themselves in the painting business, organize a community band, sponsor other civic projects, become two of Middletown's most esteemed citizens. From 1875 to 1881 he was a first city policeman in Middletown, Butler, OH. In 1920 James was a house painter in Middletown, Butler, OH.
