1630. Peter Voorhees Skillman was born on 17 October 1817 in Three Mile Run, New Brunswick, Somerset, NJ. He appeared in the census on 20 June 1870 in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA. On 20 June 1870 he was a Machinist in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA. Peter died in 1892 at the age of 75 in San Francisco Co., CA. He and brother Abraham D. owned the Skillman Brothers Sawmill near the town of Washington, Nevada Co., CA., which, according to the Thompson and West "History of Nevada County," is "one mile west of Alpha." The mill burned in 1858 with 300,000 feet of lumber. Skillman Flat, a campground in the Tahoe national Forest was named for them. The Flat is located about a mile southwest of the old Alpha Diggings and about three miles from Washington.
