Roger Molbry Skillman and Mary Noreen Yeargin were married about 1945 in Miami, Dade, FL. Mary Noreen Yeargin was born on 28 May 1921 in Atlanta, GA. She served in the military on 25 July 1944 in U.S. Army Air Corps. She enlisted as a Private in the Woman's Army Corps (WAC) on 7/25/1944 at Atlanta, GA. When Noreen Skillman believed in a cause, no one was going to stand in her way.
She spent her life fighting for women, children, animals, civil rights, the environment and the Democrat way. She lobbied for women's health issues at the Georgia Capitol and protested the Ku Klux Klan.
"She was a socially conscious woman not afraid to speak up for her convictions," said her daughter-in-law, Trisha Renaud of Tucker.
In 1942, the Atlanta native aided the war effort as a tool expediter at the B-29 assembly line in Marietta. When she discovered women were being paid considerably less than men for the same work, she threatened to quit and take other female employees with her. She got a 25-cents-an-hour raise.
Mrs. Skillman set up Head Start programs throughout the South. "Noreen made a lot of sacrifices, and because of them, life is better for a multitude of children and families," said Elizabeth Taylor of Atlanta, who worked with her at Head Start.
"We drove together to Washington, D.C., to be in a protest march when they were thinking of appealing the abortion law in the late 1980s," said Billie Parsons of Acworth. "If she were still around, we'd probably do it again today."
Mary Noreen Skillman, 83, of Tucker died Monday of pneumonia at DeKalb Medical Center. The body was donated to Emory University School of Medicine. The memorial service is 2:30 p.m. today at the Mary Gay House in Decatur.
The animal lover ran a zoomobile for Zoo Atlanta, taking pythons, ferrets and skunks to children to teach them about wildlife. She volunteered with the Atlanta Oceans club to clean up Georgia beaches and protect the sea turtles.
A staunch Democrat, Mrs. Skillman was asked to help former U.S. Sen. Wyche Fowler in his 1992 runoff with Republican Paul Coverdell. She readily agreed and appeared in a TV ad for him.
Mrs. Skillman enjoyed life's simple pleasures. "We didn't need money to entertain ourselves," Mrs. Parsons said. "We would go to department stores, try on hats, make faces and laugh."
Survivors include a son, James Douglas Skillman of Tucker; and three grandchildren.
