8396. John Elden Skillman was born on 5 June 1924 in Marysville, Onondaga, NY. He was living on 20 May 1999 in Mt. Vernon, Knox, OH. He died on 15 January 2001 at the age of 76 at Village of Westerville Care Center in Westerville, OH. John E. Skillman, 76, of Westerville, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Monday, January 15, 2001, at the Village of Westerville Care Center. He attended The Ohio State University and retired as operations manager of Bassett Industries in Columbus. He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in the European Theater of World War Two and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during the invasion of Normandy. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mount Vernon, Whitehall Lodge 761 F&AM in Columbus, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Aladdin Temple Shrine AANOMS in Columbus and Baldwin Shrine Club in Mount Vernon. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and his life was dedicated to his family and friends. He was an advisor, coach, counselor, example, fan, friend, listener, mentor, problem solver, provider and teacher to his family and all those fortunate to have known him.

He was born June 5, 1924, in Marysville to the late Elden H. and Iva Lou Jenkins Skillman and was predeceased by two brothers, Edward Skillman and Lewis Skillman and in 1999 by his wife, Reta Rice Skillman.

He is survived by three daughters, Victoria Susan (Dr. Ron) Hundenschilt of Westerville and Jacky (Ron) Walters and Jennifer Kay Price of Delaware; two sons; two sons, Drew (Melissa) Skillman of Dublin and Edward (Lyn) Skillman of Columbus; Terry Brasseur of Mount Vernon whom he loved as a son; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1p.m. Friday at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. The Rev. Jamie Gump will officiate and burial with military honors conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will be at Mount View Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. John was educated at the Ohio State University at Ohio State University in Columbus, Franklin, OH. He served in the military WWII in European Theater. He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in the European Theater of War during World War Two and received a Purple Heart for wounds received in the invasion of Normandy. He was an operations manager at Bassett Industries in Columbus, OH. John had Social Security Number 273-22-5231. He was buried at Mound View Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Knox, OH. Rev. Jamie Gump officiated. Burial with military honors conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.

Vernon, Knox, OH in May 1999. She died on 20 May 1999 at the age of 74 in Mt. Vernon, Knox, OH. Obit in Mt. Vernon News (OH), 5/22/1999. Reta had Social Security Number 287-20-0125. She was a member at First Christian Church in Ohio. She was buried at Mound View Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Knox, OH.
