Ernest Edward Skillman Sr., longtime administrative assistant for former Mayor-President W.W. "Woody" Dumas, died at 9:15 a.m. today at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

Skillman, 79, who was with the mayor's office for 16 years, served as campaign manager for Dumas' first mayoral campaign.

Arrangements are incomplete at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St. However, family members said visiting hours will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday. Services are to be at the funeral home and burial will be in Jackson.

Skillman, a Crowley native and Baton Rouge resident since 1933, retired when Mayor-President Pat Screen took office in 1981, but remained active in Lions Club civic work, according to his son, William B. "Ben" Skillman.

He began work as a General Motors Acceptance Corp. field representative in 1935 and was manager of the Baton Rouge office until 1958. He later was involved in the real estate and property management business.

He was an unsuccessful candidate for the city-parish council in 1960.

Skillman, a 32nd degree Mason, was a past president of the East Baton Rouge Lions Club, past district governor of Lions International and past president of the Louisiana Lions League for Crippled Children. He also had served as an officer for the Inter-Civic Club Council of Baton Rouge and had served for five years on the Area and Facilities Committee of the East Baton Rouge Recreation and Park Commission.

In addition to his son Ben, Skillman is survived by his wife, Helen Klein Skillman; son, Ernest E. Skillman Jr. of Baton Rouge; sister, Mrs. Granville (Hazel) Carroll of Denham Springs; and two grandchildren, Piper Lea Skillman and Bennett Brady Skillman.

Ernest served in the military from 1961 to 1964 at Vietnam in U.S. Navy. He was educated postgrad. in 1973. He died on 21 November 2010 at the age of 73. Ernest Edward "Ed" Skillman Jr.

Born in New Orleans on Oct. 3, 1937, he died at Ollie Steele Burden Manor on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010. A graduate of Baton Rouge High School and LSU, he joined the Navy and became an officer serving on the USS Coral Sea. Ed's love of the Navy and his country was his passion. Ed was a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, LSU Foundation, LSU TAF, various Republican Party organizations, the Navy League, and the VFW, and also a proud member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He was an avid LSU Tiger fan and enjoyed following the New Orleans Saints. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest Sr. and Helen K. Skillman. He is survived by a brother, Ben Skillman and wife Sue; nephew, Brady Skillman; niece, Piper Skillman; and cousins, Catherine "Sis" McIntyre Pegues, Ronnie McIntyre, Betty Bahlinger, Suella Dardin and Carol Reynolds. Visitation at St. Jude Catholic Church, 9150 Highland Road, on Tuesday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. until service at 10:30 a.m. Burial in Jackson Cemetery, Jackson. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Baton Rouge, 9063 Siegen Lane, Suite A, Baton Rouge, 70810 or St. Jude Catholic Church, 9150 Highland Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70810.
