John A. Sclavos, Sr, age 85 passed away on Monday, April 9, 2012. John was the son of the late Constantine "Gus" Sclavos and Agnes Skillman Sclavos.
John was a 1943 graduate of Elkton High School. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the Marines where he did two tours of duty in World War II and the Korean War. He was the former owner and operator of the Glasgow Arms Restaurant in Newark, Delaware with his sister, a business that was started by their father. John was an accomplished artist who studied under Frank Schoonover. Over the years, he had been commissioned to paint more than 200 portraits including Maryland State Senator Walter Baker and the late Sherman Tribbett, former Governor of Delaware.

He was an avid weight lifter and enjoyed telling jokes. John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Stephanie "Stell" Trush Sclavos; children: Mary Ann Bilson of Rising Sun, MD, Catherine A. Sturgeon and her fiance', David Streets of Elkton, MD, Stephen C. Sclavos and his wife Brenda of Elkton, MD; sister, Mary Murphy and her husband Robert of Newark, DE ;grandchildren, Michael Bilson, Anthony Bilson, Jennifer Parrish, Paul Sclavos, Jr, Matthew Sclavos and Stephanie Sturgeon; and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, John A, Sclavos, Jr. and Paul Q. Sclavos, Sr.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Noon on Monday, April 16, 2012 at St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church, 2431 Frazer Road, Newark, DE. 19702, where visitation will begin at 10:30. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in John's memory to Saint Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church at the above address.
