John Van Zandt, [1912-1981] John Van Zandt, 68, of 9 LeMoyne Avenue Extension, Washington, died at 7:45 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 1981, in the Washington Hospital Extended Care Facility. He was born December 7, 1912 in Chicago, Illinois, a son of Hubert and Eileen Bailey Van Zandt. He moved to Washington in 1961 as a sales executive for Jessop Steel Company and retired from that position in 1978. Mr. Van Zandt was the founder of Zenith Exploration Company and was its general partner at the time of his death. He was a graduate of Hinsdale, Illinois schools and attended Lewis Institute of Chicago. On May 31, 1940 in Fon du Lac, Wisconsin, he married Barbara Dieman, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Peter (Mary) McWhorter, and Susan Van Zandt, both of Coral Gables, Florida, and Carol Van Zanddt, of Kansas City, Missouri; one brother, Robert Van Zandt, of Houston, Texas; one sister, Peggy Van Zandt Wilder, of Easton, Maryland; and two grandchildren, Iden and Amber McWhorter. Mr. van Zandt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry [sic] van Zandt, of Hinsdale, Illinois. The Rev. Louis Peek, a close friend of the Dieman family, read the service which was followed by a reception at the Fond du Lac Town and Country club. For her wedding the bride wore a floor lenght white silk jersey frock, the bodice of soft folds and the skirt draped into fullness. She wore a small Juliet cap of Jersey and carried white roses in a loose arm bouquet. Her sister Dorothy, was her only attendant, wore pale pink jersey silk with a matching turban and her flowers were pink roses. Richard Chambers of Hinsdale, was Mr. van Zandt's best man. The bride attended Carroll college, where she was a member of Beta Chi Theta sorority and Mr. van Zandt attended Lewis Institute, Chicago. Barbara Mary Dieman, daughter of Charles William Dieman and Caroline Bertha Nast, was born on 2 January 1918 in Green Bay, Brown, WI. She died on 30 December 2008 at the age of 90 in Delray Beach, FL. Barbara Mary Dieman died on 30 December 2008 at Florida at age 90; Barbara Van Zandt Stapleton, 90, of Delray Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, December 30, 2008. She was born June 2, 1918, in Green Bay, Wis., a daughter of Charles Dieman and Caroline Nast. Mrs. Stapleton grew up in Fond du Lac, Wis., surrounded by four brothers and sisters and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She attended Carroll College, then went to Milwaukee, Wis., to work as a secretary for U.S. Steel, where she met and married John van Zandt. They raised their three daughters in Duluth, Minn., where she was very active in the Junior League, serving as president from 1959 to 1961. In 1961, she moved to Washington when her husband accepted a job with Jessop Steel. After her first husband's death in 1981, she married William Stapleton and began spending winters in Vero Beach, Fla. Widowed a second time, she moved to Harbour's Edge assisted-living facility in Delray Beach, where she enjoyed her final years close to her family and enjoyed the company of many wonderful friends. Surviving are three daughters, Carol van Zandt of Kansas City, Mo., Mary van Zandt of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Susan Squires of Miami, Fla; three grandchildren, Iden McWhorter, Amber Ortoll and Clayton Squires; and four great grandchildren.
