A public memorial service for Gerry Ann Schabarum, wife of former California Assemblyman and Los Angeles County Supervisor Peter F. Schabarum, will be held March 17 in Palm Desert. Mrs. Schabarum, 70, died March 7 from complications of rheumatoid arthritis in a hospice near her Indian Wells home, surrounded by her family.

The Schabarums sold their Covina Hills home and moved to Indian Wells fulltime in 1991 following Schabarum’s retirement from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, where he served for 19 years. The Board of Supervisors will adjourn its March 13 meeting in Mrs.
Schabarum’s memory.

A private graveside ceremony for family only will be held March 16 at the Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles, where Peter Schabarum’s father,grandfather and other family members are interred. The public memorial service will be held the following day at 1 p.m. at the Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church, 47-321 Highway 74, Palm Desert. Gerry Ann Schabarum is survived by her husband; stepmother Margaret Curtice of Santa Barbara; brother Jim Curtice of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughter Laura Schabarum Vandivort and son-in-law Greg of Fallbrook, Calif.; son Frank Curtice Schabarum and daughter-in-law Cynthia of Redding, Calif.; son Tom Schabarum of Seattle, Wash.; and four randchildren, Kimberly and Kevin Vandivort and Elena and Curtice Schabarum.

Mrs. Schabarum was born in Owensboro, Ky. on April 26, 1936 to Jack Camp Curtice and Kathryn Mason Skillman. Her mother passed away at an early age and her father then married Margaret Brittingham. Her family lived in Texas, Utah and California. She then went on to study at the University of Redlands in California.

A thirst for adventure landed her an airline stewardess job with American Airlines, with whom she flew until she met Schabarum on a blind date. They were married in 1957 in Las Vegas after a whirlwind romance and settled in Enriching Lives
Covina, where she was involved with the PTA, Braille Institute, PEO and other philanthropic organizations.
Their years together included raising three children, a full political life and spending time with friends on cruises and trips to exotic locales around the world.
Over the years, she enjoyed horseback riding, fly-fishing, walking, yoga, tennis and spending time with her grandchildren.
