Linda McMillin had a variety of interests, from embroidery to race car driving.
She owned three vastly different businesses in the Butler area and was a former partner in the Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio.
Mrs. McMillin, of Butler, died Friday at Butler Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. She was 60.
Born Nov. 24, 1947 in Butler, she was the daughter of the late Edward Skillman and Evelyn Morris Skillman.
When she was a young girl, Mrs. McMillin's father used to take her to the racetrack, which fostered a love of the sport in later years. Even as a partner in the Sharon Speedway during the early 1980s through the mid-1990s, she enjoyed going to other racetracks, too.
"She liked to go to Lernerville Speedway and a bunch of different racetracks," said her daughter, Tracy McMillin, of Butler.
She promoted her love of racing through another business she owned, Sew What Embroidery in Butler, which, among other things, turned out custom embroidered hats and shirts for the Sharon Speedway.
"That was her main role in the speedway," her daughter said. "She made the hats and shirts. She started the business because it was something she liked to do."
However, after 20 years, the business likely will close now that Mrs. McMillin is no longer running it, she added.
"There's no one in the family who really knows how to do what she did, so we don't really have a choice."
Mrs. McMillin also was the owner of Ladmac Services, a tour bus sales and rental business turned repair shop.
The business used to sell or rent tour buses to groups, including many famous entertainers. On the list of those who used the service are Crystal Gayle, the Oak Ridge Boys, Barbara Mandrell, Alabama, Kris Kristofferson and Ozzy Osbourne.
In 1988, the business stopped renting and selling tour buses and switched over to strictly repairs on buses, recreational vehicles and generators.
Mrs. McMillin also owned Cosmic Signs of Butler, a business specializing in making signs and various graphics for cars and buildings. Her son, Shane McMillin, runs the company and will continue to operate it.
In addition to stock car and motocross racing, her interests included camping and horses.
"She loved horseback riding," said her daughter. "We have two mares and we loved to take them out when we could."
While her son was involved in dirt bike racing, Mrs. McMillin also was secretary for District 5 American Motorcyclists Association for five years.
"She was a racing mom when my brother was involved in it," said Ms. McMillin. "She used to take a bunch of different kids who wanted to race but their parents wouldn't go with them. She was like a mom to them, supporting them and looking out for their wellbeing when they raced."
In addition to her daughter and her son, both of Butler, Mrs. McMillin is survived by her husband, David McMillin, of Butler; two grandchildren, Chelsi and Dash McMillin, of Butler; and a brother, Edward Skillman, of Butler.
Services were held Monday at the Young Funeral Home in Butler. Burial followed in the Greenlaw Burial Estates.
